Most new Dubai communities wait years for their amenities to arrive. Jebel Ali Village's social heart has been open since 1977. This is the history of the Jebel Ali Recreation Club, and why it matters if you are buying here.

1977: the original Jebel Ali Village

Before Marina, before Downtown, before almost everything you now recognise as Dubai, there was a hill near a construction site. Sheikh Rashid was building Jebel Ali Port, at the time one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects on earth, and the British and Dutch teams building it needed somewhere to live. The answer, built in 1977, was Jebel Ali Village: around 300 villas with large gardens arranged around the hill, with a school, a mosque, a small shopping centre, and a social club at its centre.

The village was so far from town that it had to be self-sufficient, and the club was where that self-sufficiency became a community. Sports teams, Friday gatherings, amateur dramatics, a British-style pub. People who lived there in the 1980s still describe it as the best address they ever had, and they mean the club as much as the villas.

The village that died twice

In 2007, Nakheel announced a redevelopment and gave residents a year's notice. The last of the village's families moved out in 2008, and then the global crash cancelled the project. The villas stood empty. A few years later, Nakheel refurbished and re-leased them, and the village quietly came back to life for another decade before the final chapter: residents moved out again, the old villas came down, and in 2021 Nakheel launched the new master-planned Jebel Ali Village that I work in today.

The village emptied twice. The club never closed. Through every cycle, the lights stayed on.

That is the detail most people miss. Through the 2008 exodus, the abandoned years, the revival and the demolition, the Jebel Ali Recreation Club kept serving its members. It was revamped and opened to the public in 2017, and it carried the community's memory across the gap between the old village and the new one.

The modern Rec Club would be unrecognisable to a 1977 port engineer in scale, but not in purpose. Today it hosts a range of dining options: Guy Fieri's Kitchen & Bar, C House Milano, and the new arrival of the famous Irish Bar McCafferty's. The sporting facilities — the gym, pools, tennis, squash and padel courts, and the dine-in cinema — are being renovated, returning to the community with a fresh, upgraded look. It is the kind of amenity set that new communities promise and deliver years after handover. Here, it predates the homes.

Why this matters if you are buying
